Artavazd Pelechian (b. 1938, Armenia) is a filmmaker whose practice redefines the boundaries of montage, documentary, and poetic cinema. His films construct emotional and cosmic narratives without relying on conventional storytelling, instead weaving image and sound into a singular, rhythmic force. Exploring themes such as nature, migration, and collective destiny, Pelechian’s works—often termed "distance montage"—create a dynamic unity between the personal and the universal. His visionary editing techniques position him as a pivotal figure at the intersection of avant-garde cinema and documentary poetics, evoking awe, intimacy, and an almost musical sense of time.

Artavazd Pelechian lives and works in Yerevan. His films have been celebrated at institutions including the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris—where he was honored with his first monographic exhibition and a dedicated online project—the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Venice Biennale. His work has also been recognized by the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
