Hanne Tyrmi and
Hanne Beate Ueland

This conversation brings together Hanne Tyrmi and Hanne Beate Ueland, Director of Stavanger Kunstmuseum, to discuss Tyrmi’s artistic practice. Extending from the screening of the documentary Horses Die Standing, the talk will explore her work through a dialogue that weaves together the artist’s perspective and Ueland’s curatorial insights. The conversation will also focus on The Inner Loneliness, an installation by Tyrmi presented in the exhibition at Tou Scene. The installation consists of seven hanging sculptures made from duvets, chains, and judo belts. These works contrast the lead sculptures often associated with Tyrmi’s practice and featured in the film. Hammered, bent, and nailed, the monumentality and force of those rigid forms are here translated into softer materials, without relinquishing their corporeal intensity. In a state of heightened vulnerability, restraint emerges as a central motif, both as a condition and a symbol of endurance. Within the context of Stavanger Secession 2026, Tyrmi’s work can be seen as exposing the cultural projections and historical imaginaries attached to both animal and human bodies. Devoid of explicit figuration, the sculptures lend themselves as bodies that are equally animal and human, where neither can deny the presence of the other.
