Horses Die Standing, 2022

The documentary Horses Die Standing (2022) follows Hanne Tyrmi in the lead-up to her exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo. The film grants the audience an insight into the processes behind her work and the different stages through which they evolve. From footage of her early life to views from her studio in the forest, the documentary brings together an extended timeline that reflects on Tyrmi’s interest in found objects, labour, and human relations. With a strong sensibility for materiality and bodies, the film addresses the luring tension embedded in her work. In a constant movement between brutality and hope, lightness and strains, Horses Die Standing presents a rare insight into a multifaceted practice of one of Norway’s leading artists. Situated within the broader framework of Stavanger Secession 2026, the screening resonates with the exhibition’s reflections on animality, labor, power, and bodies, inviting viewers to reconsider the uneasy proximity between human civilization and the animals through which it has historically organized work and violence.
The film is directed and produced by Kari Berge in collaboration with Sandefjord Kunstforening and Doppler Film AS. Cinematography and editing by Morten Andreassen. Music by Ole Ulvik Rokseth. It also won the prize for best middle-lenght documentary NORDIC/DOCS in 2025.
All events are open to the public and free of charge.
